The initial idea to improve waterless urinals is derived from curtains swaying in the wind. A draft flowing from the outside into a room (red arrow) will cause the curtain to bulge inwards allowing air into the room. A draft in the opposite direction, from the inside to the outside will press the curtain against the window frame and restrict the airflow.
The EcoSmellstop one way valve is the above theory applied by combining two curtains.
